Sometimes this question comes up faster than expected.
A foreign friend comes to Korea, and then you start thinking, “Where should I take them in Seoul?” It sounds simple at first, but once you really think about it, it gets harder than expected.
Some places feel too obvious. Some are too crowded. And some feel tiring if you try to fit too much into one day.
So this time, I picked places in Seoul that usually work well when you want to take a foreign friend somewhere memorable. Not just places that are famous, but places people tend to actually enjoy.

Bukchon Hanok Village is a safe place to start
If it is someone’s first time in Seoul, Bukchon Hanok Village usually gets a good reaction. The reason is simple. It feels clearly different from the rest of the city.
You walk through the alleys, see the hanok houses, and the whole area immediately feels very Korean. That is why people usually remember it.
It is also good for a slow walk. You do not need to rush there, and if your friend likes taking photos, this area usually works well.
One thing to remember is that some parts are still residential. So it is better to stay quiet and not treat the whole area like a loud tourist zone.
Myeongdong is still convenient if shopping matters
Some people think Myeongdong is too obvious. But for a first visit, it is still very convenient.
There are lots of shops, lots of places to eat, and the area is easy to understand without making the day feel complicated.
If your friend wants to shop, look around, and keep things simple, Myeongdong is still an easy choice. It is also useful when you do not want to move too much between places.
You can do a lot in one area, and that alone makes it practical.
Seongsu works well if you want to show a more current side of Seoul
Seongsu feels very “Seoul right now,” and that is part of why people like taking visitors there.
It does not feel like a classic tourist area. It feels more like a place where people in Seoul actually spend time.
There are cafes, select shops, pop-up spaces, and side streets that are nice to walk through. So if your friend likes trendy places more than old landmarks, Seongsu is a strong option.
Weekends can get crowded, so it is usually better not to go too late in the day.

Gyeongbokgung is still one of the easiest places to show a Korean atmosphere
If you want to show a more traditional side of Seoul, Gyeongbokgung is one of the easiest choices.
The palace itself is worth seeing, but the area around it matters too. You can walk nearby, take your time, and the whole atmosphere feels very different from the modern parts of the city.
That contrast is often what people remember. It is especially good if your friend is interested in Korean history, traditional architecture, or places that feel more classic than trendy.
Sometimes this kind of place stays in people’s memory longer than a busy shopping street.
If you want somewhere nice in the evening, Han River or Namsan both work
Not every good Seoul outing has to happen during the day. If you want somewhere for the evening, Han River and Namsan are both good options.
They just give very different moods. Han River feels more relaxed and shows a more everyday side of Seoul.
Namsan feels more like a sightseeing stop. You get the city view, and it feels a little more dramatic.
So the better choice depends on the person you are with. If they like quiet walks, Han River is easier. If they want a classic Seoul view, Namsan is the stronger choice.
Hongdae depends more on personality, but some people love it
Hongdae is not for everyone. But for the right person, it works really well.
If your friend likes busy streets, small shops, cafes, younger crowds, and a more energetic atmosphere, Hongdae can be a fun place to visit.
If they prefer calm places, it might feel tiring instead. So I would not call Hongdae a universal recommendation. It depends more on the person.
Still, if you want to show a lively side of Seoul, it is a strong option.

The easiest way to choose is to think about the person first
If it is their first time in Seoul
→ Bukchon, Gyeongbokgung, Myeongdong
If shopping matters most
→ Myeongdong
If you want to show a more trendy side of Seoul
→ Seongsu
If they would enjoy an evening walk or a city view
→ Han River, Namsan
If they like busy and energetic places
→ Hongdae
This is usually the easiest way to decide.
It is easy to get stuck thinking about which place is the most famous. But in real life, the better question is much simpler: what kind of place would this person actually enjoy?
Seoul has a lot of options. That is what makes it fun, but it also makes it hard.
In the end, the place that matches the person usually works better than the place that is simply the most famous.
